Community Health and Health Behaviors Research Opportunity

Dr. Lucia Leone in the Department of Community Health and Health Behaviors in the School of Public Health is seeking students to work as research assistants in the Fall 2017 semester with interest in community-based interventions that focus on increasing access to healthy food. Research assistants will assist with participant recruitment, data collection and management, basic data analysis.  Other tasks (e.g., literature reviews) and projects may become available over the course of the semester. Preferred Qualifications:  Organized and detail oriented, highly motivated, strong GPA, good communication skills, ability to interact with diverse populations, and the ability to solve problems independently.

Health Sciences Charter School Volunteer Opportunity

Health Sciences Charter School is seeking UB students as classroom assistants in their Living Environment (Regents Biology) classes and labs.  Volunteer assistants will be expected to assist the classroom teacher 1-2 days per week, for at least one class period per day.  Classes periods are 45 minutes.  This is a great opportunity to connect with younger students interested in science and health careers and is a great activity to put on a resume.  Health Sciences Charter School is located at 1140 Ellicott Street, Buffalo, 14209.  It is 2 blocks from the Utica Station on the NFTA Metro Rail Line, or a short walk from the number 8 bus, along Main Street.  Please contact Sandra Small at 888-4851 or sksmall@buffalo.edu, if you are interested.

10 new generous, fully funded PhD Studentships for study in the UK and Australia

The University of Exeter and the University of Queensland are proud to announce 10 new generous, fully funded PhD studentships that will allow successful students to graduate with a joint PhD from the two institutions.

The University of Exeter and the University of Queensland are seeking exceptional students to join a world-leading, cross-continental research team tackling major challenges facing the world’s population in global sustainability and wellbeing as part of the recently launched QUEX Institute. The joint PhD programme provides a fantastic opportunity for the most talented doctoral students to work closely with world class research groups and benefit from the combined expertise and facilities offered at the two institutions. This prestigious programme provides full tuition fees, stipend, travel funds and Research Training Support Grants to the successful applicants.

The 10 studentships are available for the best applicants, 5 offered by the University of Exeter and 5 by the University of Queensland. This select group will have the chance to study in the UK and Australia, and will graduate with a double degree from the University of Exeter and the University of Queensland.

Pro-Dalit NGO’s Research Opportunity with Dr. Welch

This research involves non-government organizations focused on Dalits (formerly called ‘Untouchables’) in India. Numerous international NGOs, such as Amnesty International, the Dalit Support Program of the World Council of Churches, Human Rights Watch or the International Dalit Solidarity Network have analyzed obstacles to Dalits’ economic, political and social advancement. Their efforts have been complemented by domestic NGOs active inside India, such as the PUCL (People’s Union for Civil Liberties), the Dalit Foundation or the Hope Foundation. The United Nations is also involved, via its Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and other entities.

The successful candidate for this research position will work closely with the supervisor, seeing him on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and carry out the following research tasks:

  • Identify significant Indian NGOs focused on Dalit issues
  • Summarize their major objectives
  • Discover and summarize their specific contributions to the economic, political and social advancement of Dalits

The results of this research will be incorporated into a professional journal article and subsequent book chapter. High-quality contributions by the recipient of this grant will be credited with co-authorship.

ELI Chat Room Partners Needed

Each fall and spring semester, the English Language Institute (ELI) admits approximately 90 students from a variety of countries who attend its Intensive English Program (IEP). The University at Buffalo also enrolls almost 5,000 international students each year, many of whom are registered for English as a Second Language (ESL) credit courses.

By becoming a Chat Room partner, you will be able to help our international students not only with their conversational English skills but also with their cultural, academic and personal adjustment to UB.

The Chat Room will “open” for the fall semester on September 11 and “close” on November 17 (10 weeks). Each Chat session is for 50 minutes and could start at 2:30, 3, 3:30 or 4 p.m. As a Chat Room partner, you will be required to complete three (3) chat sessions per week for a total of 30 sessions by November 17.

In addition to completing the 30 chat sessions, you will also be required to:

  • Attend an orientation session. The dates and times of the orientation session options (which will take place during the first week of classes) will be announced at a later date.
  • Submit weekly writing assignments on UBLearns. Details will be discussed at the orientation session.

Your participation in the Chat Room program, will give you the opportunity to learn about other cultures and people as well as your own and yourself. Being a Chat Room partner will also provide you with the beginning of a true global experience here at UB. Many long-lasting friendships have developed from chat sessions and students often say that their Chat Room experience has been a highlight of their UB studies.

This is a 2-credit course, and is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Registration is by permission of the instructor.  Registration for ESL 320 Conversation Seminar will be completed after attending one of the orientation meetings.  You can also volunteer as a Chat Room partner.  This means you will not earn credit, need to complete 30 sessions or submit the weekly UBLearns writing assignments.

Research Opportunity on the “Dalits” with Claude Welch

This research opportunity requires good academic judgment regarding the importance of published articles and their significance for on-going research on Indian politics.

About 1/6th of India’s population are Dalits. [They were formerly known as Untouchables.] An immense amount has been written about them, including a great deal of polemical literature. With the help of previous CURCA-sponsored students, relevant articles from the respected Economic and Political Weekly have been identified and summaries prepared for most. The recipient of the CURCA award will be expected to read the as-yet unread and unsummarized articles, and prepare summaries of their contents. Detailed guidelines will be provided, including examples from the previous grant winner. High-quality contributions by the recipient of this grant will be credited with co-authorship.

Honors experience credit is available in the form of independent study or research.

This course teaches the skills of public speaking through the art of theatre and performance. The goal of the course is to provide tools and training to help students develop their professional presence for live audiences and digital media, including public research presentations, conference presentations, and for screens big and small. Students will work both on forma and delivery of content, including your 30 second elevator pitch, viral videos, blog posts, and more. No prior performance experience required.

Division of Behavioral Medicine Seeks Research Assistants for Fall 2017

The Division of Behavioral Medicine is looking for 4-5 highly motivated undergraduates to work as research assistants in the Fall 2017 semester.

We have several exciting projects that are looking for students to help with laboratory experiments and clinical field studies. Projects include examining how cognitive biases influence energy intake, working with children to examine choices between food and fun activities, and working with overweight and obese families in a clinical weight-control program.
