and rehabbing housing, and developing businesses through training, microlending, and a small business
incubation. We primarily work with refugees, immigrants, and low-income individuals with programs and
services tailored to these communities. We have over 350 people interested in small business services
with over 80 operating business startups and over 50 loans disbursed.

Primary Purpose and Function
● Guide minimum of 100 small business owners and/or burgeoning entrepreneurs through the
process of starting or expanding a business through the Economic Development Program via
financial literacy, financing, business counseling, and technical assistance training.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
● Recruit prospective and current business owners interested in accessing business training,
technical assistance, and business loans in the neighborhoods and communities of Buffalo, NY.
● Provide one-on-one technical assistance to clients in financial literacy, credit, and business
counseling, to establish financial stability and help them start or expand a business.
● Support clients in developing business plans, business financials (including interim), and financial
projections.
● Recruit volunteer business coaches, match the coaches with appropriate clients, and manage
these connections.
● Guide clients through the microloan application process adhering to SBA and CDFI standards.
● Assist in the underwriting of credit-building and business loans up to $20,000.
● Log, monitor, and report the information in Loan Management database system.

Possible Functions and Responsibilities
● Support EDD in program development, including statistical analysis, project management, and
other duties as assigned.
● Develop economic development programs to benefit clients and/or other West Side residents.
● Gather research to augment EDD’s current work.
Required Knowledge and Skills
● Strong knowledge of business plans, cash flow models, and other general business topics.
● Strong understanding of lending, including credit history and collateral.
● Strong customer service tendencies, especially in cross-cultural contexts.
● Ability to manage, organize, and update relevant data using both cloud-based and software
database applications, including loan management and outcome tracking systems.
● Ability to create statistical tools and reports using spreadsheets.
● Competent in MS Office products, Google products, email and internet applications.
● Fluency in English language, both oral and written.
● Demonstrated problem solving and people skills.
● High accuracy in work, attention to detail.
● Proven oral and written skills.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills
● Fluency in Spanish language, Asian/African languages, and/or Arabic.
● Knowledgeable or ability to learn the neighborhoods and communities of Buffalo, NY, and
immediate surrounding areas.
● Bachelors in Business, Economics, Finance, or a related field.
Physical Demands
● Sitting in meetings for long periods of time, up to 2 hours at a time.
● Visiting local businesses by car, walking, or public transportation.
● Frequent alpha/numeric keyboarding.
● Frequent oral communication in person and over the phone.
● Ability to view a computer monitor for long periods of time.

Aloma D. Johnson Charter School Volunteers Needed with After School Program

Aloma D. Johnson Charter School (in North Buffalo) is interested in having some UB students engage with their students through their after-school program between 4:00 and 5:00 during the week. They are looking for a consistent commitment but are flexible in terms of what days students or groups of students come. They are interested in having students engage around basic literacy activities- they have the materials and will go over everything with the students.

US-UK Fulbright Commission for the 2018 UK Summer Institute Award Programmes for US Undergraduates Now OPEN

The US-UK Fulbright Commission applications for the 2018 UK Summer Institute Award Programmes for US Undergraduates are open.   The Fulbright UK Summer Institute Programmes offer students a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the study of British academics and culture. Students will take part in research, collaboration, presentation, and cultural events at an esteemed British university. They will enhance their leadership skills, develop knowledge and understanding of new subjects, and become ambassadors for the United Kingdom and the United States.

Eligible students from all areas of study are encouraged to apply.  For Summer 2018, there are nine Institutes with varied themes and subject areas.  Two new Institutes are on offer at Aberystwyth University in Wales and University of Birmingham as well as seven returning host universities with varying themes and subjects of study.
These  include:

To meet the minimum eligibility, applicants must:

  • be a US citizen and possess a US passport;
  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have a high level of academic achievement with a minimum GPA of 3.7 (confirmed by academic marks, awards and references);
  • have at least two years of university study upon their return ( i.e. applicants should currently be a Freshman or Sophomore in college/university)
  • have little or no study/travel experience outside the US
  • be mature, responsible, independent, and open-minded

In partnership with UK universities, the Institute will cover costs, including return US/UK flights, university fees, and room and board at the host UK University.

Deadline for 2018 is:  7 February 2018 for ALL Institutes. Each Programme also vary between three and four weeks.  Please make sure to check the specific Institute page for more details.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) Workshops for Juniors

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) Workshops for Juniors

Would you like to be fully funded for graduate school?  Many students think that they will be “fully funded” throughout their graduate programs but they really have a Teaching Assistantship (TA position) where they are paid to teach 20 hours a week.  A fellowship like the NSF GRFP is truly a fully funded award.

The NSF awards three-year scholarships for graduate study in mathematical, physical, biological, engineering and behavioral and social sciences, including the history of science.  This fellowship carries a stipend of $32,000 per year plus a cost of education allowance to cover tuition and fees for three years.  This is a significant graduate fellowship that affords students the freedom to focus on their research and lessen the time to degree completion.

To qualify, applicants must be US citizens, have US national status or be permanent residents, intend to pursue a research-based master’s or Ph.D. program in an NSF-supported field. Applications become available in August and the deadlines vary by discipline but are generally in late October and early November: www.nsfgrfp.org.

To help you prepare a competitive application UB will be hosting a series of NSF GRPF workshops this spring. You will learn more about how to apply for the NSF GRFP and other awards, what the review panels are looking for and how to write a strong research proposal.  These sessions will be hosted by the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships along with a writing consultant from the Center for Excellence in Writing.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays: February 15, March 1, March 15 and March 29.  The sessions will be offered from either 9:00am-10:00am or 3:00pm-4:00pm on each of these days.  Students are required to commit to all 4 sessions which includes beginning preparation of the 3 page past research and personal statement and 2 page research proposal.

Fulbright Application Development Workshops for Juniors

Would you like to spend a year after graduation researching, teaching or earning a master’s degree abroad?  The Fulbright provides funded opportunities for undergraduates to travel for a year after they graduate. There are more than 150 countries to choose from.*

Fulbright applications are due almost a full year before your dates of travel. In order to travel the year after you graduate, you’ll have to submit your application in September of your senior year so now’s the time to start thinking about your application!

To help you prepare a competitive application UB will be hosting a series of Fulbright workshops this spring.  You will learn more about Fulbright, how to select the country to which you’ll apply and how to propose the required cross-cultural engagement project.  These sessions will be hosted by the Office of Fellowships and Scholarships and UB’s Fulbright Program Advisor, Dr. Colleen Culleton.
