Video Production Student Assistant Positions

Posted by Tim on April 29, 2015 in Career Opportunities, Honors Experiences, Internships, Student Assistant, Student Job Opportunities

The National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science is looking for two student assistants to provide media production support during a three-day workshop July 14-16, 2015.

This three-day workshop is part of a National Science Foundation Award which funds the Case Studies and the Flipped Classroom project here at UB. This project brings together faculty from across the country to write case studies focused on topics in biology, and to work with these faculty to produce short video programs to accompany these cases.

Student assistants will attend the workshop and work directly with faculty in small groups and one-on-one situations on the development and production of these videos. Tasks will include participating in group presentations about video production, and directly assisting faculty with script writing, storyboarding, video and audio recording, video editing, and stop motion animation.

Experience Preferred:
• Ability to work directly with faculty in a casual learning environment and provide professional support services
• Consumer-type video cameras, including using manual settings and external microphones
• Basic lighting techniques for indoor and outdoor shooting
• Editing with both Windows Movie Maker and iMovie, advanced enough to be able to teach it*
• Some experience with computer screen capture programs (such as Doceri or Camptasia)*
• Experience creating drawing sequences, animations (such as Moovly, GoAnimate, or Wideo) or stop motion videos using iPad apps (such as Stop Motion Studio or iMotion)*

Candidates should be available to attend some case study presentations during the week of June 1-5 in order to learn about case study methods if possible (approximately 8 hours). Candidates will be expected to attend workshop planning meetings and work on their own to further develop production software skills before the workshops* (approximately 8 hours). The workshop will be held July 14-16 (approximately 24 hours).

Each student assistant will receive a $500 stipend for approximately 40 hours of work outlined above.

Interested candidates should forward a letter of interest, summary of skills (resumes preferred), and contact information via email to:
John Wild, Media Producer
Center for Educational Innovation
jhwild@buffalo.edu

To learn more about the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science please visit our website:
http://sciencecases.lib.buffalo.edu/cs/

Students without specific skills in these programs are still encouraged to apply. It is certainly an advantage to know some of these, but it is more important to have basic understanding of video editing, a high comfort level with using computers, and the skills to independently learn these types of basic programs. A limited amount of paid hours will be available for this learning and practice.
UB’s Center for Educational Innovation (a partner in this grant project) will also be recruiting a video production assistant starting in the Fall 2015 semester. This position is anticipated to be a 10-15 hour per week position. Candidates selected for the July workshop position will be strongly considered for this new position when it is announced.
