Cultural partners (mentors) needed for the International Student Mentoring Program

Posted by trm7 on September 4, 2018 in Honors Experiences, Student Job Opportunities, Volunteering, Volunteers Needed

Are you interested in learning about other cultures?  Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge of UB and Buffalo?  Do you want to help newly arrived international students?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, we need your help!

The Office of International Student Services (ISS) and UB Counseling Services invite you to participate as a Cultural Partner in the International Student Mentoring Program (ISMP). We are recruiting UB staff, alumni and domestic students to serve as Cultural Partners for newly arrived international students during the Fall 2018 semester.  You don’t have to know about other cultures, speak other languages or have traveled overseas.  All you need is a sincere desire to help others and an interest in people from other cultural backgrounds.

Here is an overview of the program:

  • Each Cultural Partner will be paired with two newly arrived international students.
  • The commitment is for one semester.
  • You must be available to meet with your students for one hour every two weeks.  You choose the activities! It can be as simple as having lunch together, going for coffee or taking a walk, or as elaborate as visiting a local tourist attraction, going to a sporting event or having a family dinner in your home.
  • There will be a half-day orientation session (including lunch) for all participants on Saturday, September 15.  You will learn about your student’s culture(s), receive valuable information about campus resources available to them, and learn tips on how to interact with someone from another country.

It doesn’t take more than one hour to make a difference and learn something new!  If you are interested in joining the International Student Mentoring Program, please complete an application.

If you have any questions about the program, please contact cmrioux@buffalo.edu .
