Interested in the Great Lakes? Learn about the lakes and ecosystems you live next to!

Posted by Tim on April 26, 2022 in Academics, Career Oportunities

EVS 326 Great Lakes Ecology
Remote –  live
Instructor: DM Sanchez Weide
Course Description
This Great Lakes Ecology class will focus on all five of the Laurentian Great Lakes and their drainage basins. Students will learn how they interact as one system, as well as the uniqueness of each lake as separate ecosystems. Effects of eutrophication, pollution, and invasive species will be discussed. Common lake processes, including lake turnover, ice-off, and primary production will be explained.
Prerequisites: None
Lecture topics will include:HistoryGeologyEutrophicationBiogeochemical cycling
Curious about the course?
Ever wonder……How climate change is affecting the Great Lakes?
…How the Great Lakes were formed?
…Why there are marine fossils found around the Great Lakes?
…If Lake Erie really caught on fire?
No Visible Life. Some river! Chocolate-brown, oily, bubbling with subsurface gases, it oozes rather than flows. “Anyone who falls into the Cuyahoga does not drown,” Cleveland’s citizens joke grimly. “He decays.” The Federal Water Pollution Control Administration dryly notes: “The lower Cuyahoga has no visible life, not even low forms such as leeches and sludge worms that usually thrive on wastes.” ― TIME magazine, Aug 1, 1969

Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC)
Each year, UB nominates one student to become a Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) Fellow. These fellows are fully funded to participate in the program throughout the 2022-2023 school year, during which they attend a four-day leadership conference in Washington, D.C., participate in monthly webinars and develop a research paper eligible for publication and awards.

Since 1970, CSPC fellows have traveled to Washington, D.C. to learn about leadership and governance, to share their outstanding research and to explore careers in public service. While attending the conference, the fellows participate in workshops where they present and receive peer feedback on their research projects. The fellows also have the opportunity to engage with policy experts, government officials and leaders in the legislative process.
Apply this summer!
Application due: June 15, 2022
