Clinton Global Initiative University hosted by Vanderbilt University March 3-5, 2023

We are writing to share the exciting news that Vanderbilt University is hosting the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) annual meeting March 3-5, 2023. I am reaching out to ask for your assistance in sharing the application information with your students.   

CGI U recruits a student cohort of young leaders who are committed to developing innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. Each year, undergraduate and graduate students from around the world apply to participate in CGI U’s year-round community of learning, leadership and action. The program’s year-round engagement model includes a social impact curriculum, training and mentorship opportunities and a wide range of networking opportunities with CGI U partners, peers, alumni, staff and leaders in the field. President Bill Clinton founded CGI U in 2007, and more than 11,800 students from over 1,800 schools, over 160 countries and all 50 states have participated. 

Applications are open now, and the deadline to apply is Friday, December 16. Students pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree at the time of application are eligible to apply, and student teams of three or fewer are also welcome.

UB Blackstone LaunchPad Aging Innovation Challenge Apply by November 9, 2022

The time to create tomorrow’s solution is now! We’re seeking innovators to develop prototypes that will assist aging New Yorkers and their caregivers in completing activities of daily living (ADLs). ADLs include taking a bath or shower, getting dressed, using the bathroom, getting up from a chair, walking across a room or eating a meal. Your innovation could make the difference to someone fighting to maintain independence in their home or to a stressed caregiver providing daily assistance to a loved one while maintaining a full-time job. 1st Place – $1,500 | 2nd Place – $1,000 | 3rd Place – $500 AUDIENCE CHOICE – $250 (Invite your family and friends to come vote for you!) Professional Opportunities for the Student Workforce to Experience Research Program (HS-POWER)

1.       Are you a student looking for a professional opportunity to learn about homeland security related research to enhance your research interests and career goals?

2.       Do you want to learn from top scientists and subject matter experts in homeland security disciplines and areas of research?

3.       Do you want to network with your peers and members of the academic and scientific communities in government facilities conducting research in DHS relevant areas?

If you answered “Yes”, to the above questions, the HS-POWER program is for you!

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors the Professional Opportunities for the Student Workforce to Experience Research Program (HS-POWER) for undergraduate and graduate students. HS-POWER is open to students majoring in a broad spectrum of homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as DHS mission-relevant research areas

As a participant in the HS-POWER Program, you will participate in quality research experiences with federal research facilities and other Homeland Security STEM focused entities nationwide either onsite or in a virtual environment. This experience will provide you with a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings within the DHS enterprise. Additionally, you will establish connections with DHS professionals that facilitate long-term relationships between yourself, researchers, DHS personnel and research facilities. 

Benefits

1.       Stipend: 

  • Undergraduate students receive a stipend of $750 per week; 
  • Graduate students receive a stipend of $950 per week.

2.       For students participating onsite:

  • Travel: Travel reimbursement for inbound and outbound expenses up to $1,000 total for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.
  • Housing Allowance: A housing allowance of $400/week is provided to participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned hosting facility and who are paying for housing while onsite. 

3.       Due to COVID 19, some students may be required to participate virtually. In that case: 

  • A stipend supplement of $50 per week will be given to offset costs of remote participation. 

Appointment Details

1.       Appointments will be for 10 consecutive weeks. 

  • Start dates beginning in early summer 2023 are negotiated between participants, their assigned mentors/facilities, and ORISE. Factors such as class schedules, housing availability and facility schedules may be taken into consideration when determining appointment start and end dates.

2.       Interns will be assigned to research projects and/or other technical activities under the guidance of a mentor.

3.       Per week time commitment varies by location.

4.       HS-POWER participants are required to have health insurance coverage during the appointment period and to provide proof of this coverage prior to the start of the appointment.

The OGHI/Blackstone Innovation sprint is designed to promote interdisciplinary teamwork. All full-time UB students, from freshman to advanced graduate students, are eligible to participate in the competition. Students may form their own teams or ask to be assigned to a team; OGHI/Blackstone staff may assign additional students to established teams to support the interdisciplinary goals of the competition.

They also can work with you to find internships that will help you stand out when it’s time to go on the job market while earning you Honors experience credits. Perhaps most importantly, the Career Design Service can help you think through professional possibilities that align with your skills and interests but may not be obvious to you.
