Child health and Behavior Lab seeks Student Research Assistants Fall 2022

Posted by Tim on May 25, 2022 in Academics, Honors Experiences, Research Information and Opportunities

Have you thought about seeking some research experience in the coming academic year? Do you like working with children? Are you interested in child development, psychology, nutrition, and/or health?

The Child Health and Behavior Lab (HABLAB) at the University of Buffalo is looking for undergraduate students to assist with research studies during Fall 2022. These research experiences would be under the leadership of Dr. Stephanie Anzman-Frasca, who conducts laboratory- and community-based studies in the area of children’s eating behavior and obesity prevention. More information about Dr. Anzman-Frasca’s work is available here: https://medicine.buffalo.edu/faculty/profile.html?ubit=safrasca, and more information about HABLAB is available at http://ubhablab.weebly.com. You can also find HABLAB on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) @ubhablab.

Responsibilities of student research assistants include: assisting with materials preparation, entering data, and helping staff in the implementation of the study design. It is anticipated that students will have the opportunity to work directly with study participants, including parents and children, in laboratory and/or community studies. Our main research study at this time is the UB Restaurant Study, which will involve data collection with children and families in local restaurants this Fall. All incoming research assistants must be able to commit to at least 135 hours of research over the semester (equates to about 10 hours per week), with preference given to students who can commit to at least two semesters. Students may be asked to commit to evenings or weekends to work with participants. For students who spend multiple semesters on the team, independent research projects, conference presentations, and/or thesis projects may be possible.

You don’t need to have prior research experience or be an upperclassman to apply! Interested students can apply by submitting an application and a resume to ubhablab@gmail.com, using “HABLAB student research assistant application Fall 2022” as the subject of the email. Applications may be downloaded at http://ubhablab.weebly.com/students. We are currently filling positions for Fall on a rolling basis.

Research Opportunities in Drug Discovery for the Neuropeptide S Ssytem and Validation of an animal model for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

Posted by Tim on March 14, 2022 in Academics, Honors Experiences, Research Information and Opportunities

A South Campus Lab is looking for enthusiastic people. The research conducted in our laboratory ranges from the molecular to the whole animal.  The particular duties assigned to the student will be determined by the experiments which are currently in progress and are likely to include animal husbandry, behavioral testing and histological analysis.

Currently there are two main projects:

1) Drug discovery for the Neuropeptide S system

2) Validation of an animal model for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

The students are encouraged to take on more responsibility as they become proficient with laboratory skills.  Our end goal is to have the student conduct small independent research projects.

To learn more and apply, please contact Dr. Clark (stewartc@buffalo.edu).

Society and Computing Club Research Project…New opportunity for students interested in Social Justice

Posted by Tim on March 4, 2022 in Honors Experiences, Research Information and Opportunities

Do you want to engage in a low-stakes, high reward research project that examines a pressing social and technological issue? If so, we invite you to join the Society and Computing Club Research Team to tackle the following question:

Do predictive policing algorithms reflect, exacerbate, or create racial bias within the policing system?

We will explore this research question through a ten-week project – discovering concrete evidence to support our claims and brainstorming solutions to these issues. We plan to create a website that centralizes information about racism within predictive policing algorithms with this research.

We hope to build a strong team of dedicated researchers eager to tackle this urgent issue. We welcome people from all years, majors, and experience levels – therefore, no previous research experience is required! All we ask is that you commit to at least two hours per week for independent research and group meetings.

Please fill out this short form if you are interested in joining us! This is just to gather interest; we will be in touch with more information before you decide.
