Explore Buffalo is seeking a full-time Education Coordinator with an engaging and enthusiastic personality to join our energetic and professional team in support of the organization’s mission of promoting Buffalo and Western New York history, architecture and neighborhoods through quality education to learners of all ages.
Responsibilities: Youth Education Programming
Manage Explore Buffalo’s youth education programs, including but not limited to:
• Coordinate tours for K-12 schools and colleges:
o Act as primary point of contact for groups planning their tour, including confirming tour
details, arranging payment, scheduling docents for the tour, communicating tour details to
docents, coordinating Activity Book distribution to schools (if applicable), thanking
groups after the tour, and requesting tour feedback.
o Work with Education Committee to develop School Tours and associated supplementary
materials.
o Maintain an awareness of current school curriculum and learning standards to ensure
School Tours and materials connect with requirements. Distribute continuing education
opportunities and reading materials to School Docents as appropriate.
o Cultivate new relationships with college programs, school districts, and other youth
programs to expand the Education Program’s impact.
• Oversee Explore Buffalo youth educational programs, including the Scouts BSA Architecture
Merit Badge Workshop, Explore the Summer, Architecture & Use Workshop, and Junior
Explorers Workshop.
o Work with community partners and the Education Committee to schedule and deliver all
aspects of the programs, including but not limited to developing promotional materials
and program content, scheduling volunteers, training new volunteers, etc.
Docent Training
Primary staff support for Explore Buffalo’s Docent Training programs, which include three new docent
classes per year and a continuing education program (Explore Buffalo University):
• Participate in the Docent Training Committee’s planning process for each training program.
• Work with other staff to facilitate promotion of docent training and recruitment of new docents.
• Attend each training class, providing administrative and logistical support.
• Be the primary staff liaison for trainees in the docent training program.
• Supervise the School Docent Certification program, working with the Education Committee.
o Recruit school docents to ensure Education Program docent needs are met
o Review all school docents annually to ensure a high-quality experience for schools.
Adult Education Programming
Manage Explore Buffalo’s non-tour adult educational programs, including but not limited to:
• Manage the Speaker Series, History/Architecture Courses, and Teacher Center Courses:
o Work with volunteers, and community partners where applicable, to coordinate program
schedules, content, and implementation.
• Manage the Guest Speaker program:
o Act as primary point of contact for groups booking Guest Speaker engagements,
including confirming program details, arranging payment, scheduling docents,
communicating program details to docents, thanking groups after their program, and
maintaining an active database of available talks.
• Facilitate training and feedback for docents preparing new presentations.
• Innovate other educational programs as applicable and oversee their development and
implementation.
Development Support
Support education-focused fundraising efforts:
• Administer use of the Education Fund, tracking the use of available funds.
• Administer grant funding, maintaining records as required by funders for accountability.
• Develop and maintain relationships with donors and other funders.
Other
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with other cultural, nonprofit, and historical
organizations in WNY.
• Represent Explore Buffalo in a professional, personable manner through tabling, speaking
engagements, attendance at community partner events and Explore Buffalo events, etc.
• Assist with general office tasks and major events as needed, and other duties as they may
develop.
Qualifications:
• Enthusiastic and energetic personality
• Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced work environment
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and with a team, depending on the task
• Attention to detail; ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Comfortable speaking in front of groups at all age levels (youth, adult, senior)
• Bachelor’s Degree (Education degree is encouraged, but not required)
• Non-profit experience is encouraged, particularly with a cultural organization and/or in an
educational setting
• Experience working with youth is strongly encouraged
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
• Primarily regular office hours, with various evenings and weekends required
• Must have reliable transportation
