Part Time Research Associate Positions Available with the

UB Department of Emergency Medicine

Fall 2019 and Spring 2020

The Department of Emergency Medicine is looking for several part-time Research Associates (RAs). Our RAs work in the emergency departments (EDs) of the Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) and the Buffalo General Medical Center (BGMC), and may assist with projects outside the emergency department. We are currently looking for RAs to work in the ECMC ED and the BGMC ED.

Research Associates directly approach emergency department patients and family members treated in the emergency department.  RA’s must be able to work in a clinical environment that is unpredictable and fast paced. RA’s will see patients in many clinical scenarios, some of which may be disturbing to some individuals. Prospective RA’s should consider whether the emergency department is a setting in which they feel comfortable working.

Research Associates’ daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Identification of patients who meet ongoing study/quality improvement project inclusion and exclusion criteria
  • Obtaining informed consent from patients and/or family members for participation in research when required
  • Collection of relevant study data through patient interviews, medical record review, telephone follow-up calls to patients, and other methods
  • Assisting emergency department staff with general duties including:
    • Distributing blankets, pillows, and other comfort items to patients
    • Transporting specimens (including blood) to the laboratory
    • Other activities as the need arises

Work Schedule: The Research Associates’ program provides coverage in the emergency departments Monday through Sunday, from 8 am to Midnight.

  • Shifts are scheduled in 4- or 8-hour blocks
  • The total number of shifts worked per week is flexible, but a minimum commitment of 12 hours availability per week is required.
  • RA’s are assigned a permanent schedule each semester (e.g. an RA will work Tuesdays, 8 am-4 pm every week during the Fall semester)
  • Once a schedule has been agreed to by the RA and the Research Coordinator, the RA is expected to work all scheduled shifts or find coverage
  • RA’s are expected to periodically cover shifts of other RA’s who request off.  This ensures that all RA’s can have flexibility when needed.
  • RA’s are invited back to the program and schedules are changed each semester depending upon the RA’s performance and availability (e.g. Fall, Winter Break, Spring, Summer)
  • Prospective RA’s should be available to work for a minimum of 2 semesters

Compensation: The pay is $12.00 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • Graduation from a 4 year university
  • Past or current field of study related to healthcare, health sciences, pre-
  • Ability to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner
  • Completion of a human subjects and research ethics training course upon hire
  • Transportation to and from the worksite is required.
  • Ability to arrive at scheduled shift on time and stay until the end of scheduled shift consistently

Applicants should be willing to start in the fall AND continue into the winter break and spring semester with the understanding that a minimum commitment of 12 hours is needed for the spring Semester as well.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience interviewing study participants in a clinical environment
  • Experience interacting with patients
  • Experience using electronic medical records
  • Familiarity with conducting chart reviews for research studies
  • Students taking a “gap year” are strongly encouraged to apply
