Want to spend your summer:

  • Assisting new students in their transition to college at UB?
  • Building connections with peers and staff across campus?
  • Growing your individual leadership skills?
  • Making unforgettable memories?

Apply to join the 2021 Orientation Leader team! Orientation Leaders have the opportunity to share their unique UB stories with the incoming class and make an impact at the start of their journey by showing new students that they are supported; they can find others who share their identities, goals, and passions; and they matter and belong.

Summer Orientation 2021 will be a virtual program. Orientation Leaders will live on campus with their teammates this summer in order to have equal access to the technology/resources they need to successfully facilitate the program, as well as have opportunities to form connections with peers and staff!

The position is paid at a rate of $15.00 per hour for a total ranging approximately from $2,000 to $3,000, paid throughout Summer Orientation and Welcome Weekend. Please note: this is a pre-tax amount.

You will find detailed information about the position on UBLinked. You can apply by completing this application on UB Linked, which includes a Big Interview video activity — so don’t wait until the last minute because you will need to film part of your application!

We’ll be accepting applications through March 17 at 11:59 p.m. We welcome all undergraduate students, from all majors and backgrounds to apply.

For questions, please contact Val Luutran in Orientation, Transition and Parent Programs, vgluutra@buffalo.edu.

Avant PLACE Exam for Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish

Posted by Tim on March 6, 2021 in Academics

As students start preparing for Summer 2021 and/or Fall 2021 registration, those interested in studying Chinese, French, Italian and/or Spanish at UB for the first time must take the Avant PLACE exam before they can register in courses.   They should take the test as soon as possible, at least a few weeks before their registration window opens.

For more information and for registration, please visit:

Chinese:

https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/linguistics/language-placement-testing.html

French, Italian, Spanish:

https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/romance-languages-literatures/undergraduate/intro-language-courses.html

Brief overview:

The exam is intended for students who:

·         studied Chinese, French, Italian or Spanish in a classroom, or other formal setting, for more a year+

·         used Chinese, French, Italian, Kreyol, or Spanish at home

·         lived in a place where Chinese, French, Italian, Kreyol, or Spanish was spoken

The exam is not intended for students who:

·         have never studied the language they plan to take at UB ( these students will start with 101),

·         have transferred college coursework or alternative exam credit that has been articulated to a UB course/s (see TAURUS for articulations, these students will continue with the next level up in proficiency),

·         are repeating a course to improve their grade

have already completed language courses at UB

When to take the test?   Before the student’s registration window for the semester in which they plan to take the course.

When will the students know their placement? The test takes 3-7 days to be corrected (not counting weekends).  Once we receive the results, we upload them into HUB and the students will receive an email with their results to their UB email account (not on weekends).

Results may be delayed in posting if students do not follow the instructions, in particular,  they must only use their correct UB Person Number as log on and UB Email for communicating results.

Where can students and/or advisors see the results?  The results can be seen in HUB (Admissions Tab together with all other test results) and in Navigate once the results are uploaded into HUB.

Can they repeat the test?  No

Please note:  1) the test is for active UB students only, 2) the test is not a proficiency test, 3) the test does not grant any college level credits.

UB Study Abroad Alumni Spotlight

Posted by Tim on March 1, 2021 in Community Announcements, Study Abroad

Our Alumni Spotlight highlights the impact that studying abroad has had on the careers and lives of UB Alumni!

Meet Dr. Dayle Hodge, UB Study Abroad Alumnus, and hear him speak about how participating in UB’s Global E3 study abroad program has helped shape his career as a Resident Anesthesiologist. Dr. Hodge received an M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. Degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering with a minor in French from UB. He spent his junior year in France and looks back on how impactful this experience was and the many opportunities it has afforded him since then.
