The Hillel Summer Internship Program is an 8-week paid internship and cohort experience open to incoming Jewish sophomores, juniors and seniors who are either enrolled in a Buffalo area university or who are from Buffalo and attend schools out of town. Students will be placed in internships across Buffalo that match their professional goals and that will provide them with relevant, hands-on experience and mentorship. On Fridays students will participate in professional development and immersive learning experiences, such as a networking power lunch with local Jewish professionals, volunteering with local non-profits, and exploring Buffalo’s start-up scene. The Summer Institute (SI) is a two-week creative writing and cultural exchange program for participants age 18-22 from Pakistan, India, and the U.S.
Due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the SI will be held virtually in 2021. Students from all disciplines – the arts, humanities, sciences, and everything in between – are welcome to apply! This program is free for accepted applicants and will focus on creative writing and the power of narrative.
Attendees take part in collaborative workshops focused on their creative work, in seminars to expand literary knowledge of diverse global literatures, in special seminars on the craft of writing, and in activities designed to forge new lines of understanding and shared purpose among its community of writers. The SI is an opportunity to see writing as a form of action – a personally-empowering skill that can be employed for social change.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS
The Summer Internship Programs are designed to provide undergraduate college students opportunities to be mentored by professionals in their chosen research field, to become familiar with the use of state-of-the-art scientific equipment and technology, and to learn valuable interpersonal and presentation skills. The goal of these programs is to expose undergraduate college students to exciting advances in biomedical sciences that will help define their career paths.
For the 2021Summer Internship Programs, interns will have the opportunity to work in the areas of cell biology, epigenetics, metabolism and nutritional programming, neurodegenerative science and structural biology. For more information on Van Andel Institute (VAI) laboratories, please click here.
We expect to support 25 – 30 undergraduate student summer internships in VAI research laboratories. Interns will be paired with a scientific investigator and/or their designee for an intense 10-week research experience. Interns will gain an understanding of the latest research methods, instruments, and testing procedures. They will learn how to design experiments and see how their test results can contribute to a larger research project. At the end of each internship program, interns will give an oral presentation or poster presentation about their experience to VAI research staff.

INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Undergraduate college students must have completed at least one year of higher education (equivalent to 24 credit hours), be enrolled in a science/research related degree program and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
Students who have graduated before the start date of the summer internship program (May 10, 2021) are ineligible. If you are currently enrolled as a high school student or in a Master’s degree program, you are ineligible to participate in the undergraduate research summer internship program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Assignments may involve the use of potentially hazardous chemicals, hazardous or radioactive materials, or may be in areas where such materials are used. Adherence to safety policies and procedures along with proper storage and disposal methods are required.

This internship is for participants in a wide variety of fields including, but not limited to: Business Management, Communications and Graphic Design, Computer Sciences, Economics, Marketing, Mathematics and Statistics, and Survey Methodology.
What will I be doing?
As a Research Ambassador intern, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings. You will learn and collaborate on projects that make use of expertise from a variety of fields, including survey methodology, survey statistics, economics and other social science disciplines to design, study, implement and conduct national surveys to measure the science and engineering enterprise. You will also be engaged in research projects, evaluation initiatives, surveys, data collection and specialized analyses.
What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates. Appointments are typically between May and September.
