WNY BloodCare Innovation Sprint September 8-October 6

WNY BloodCare Innovation Sprint, September 8th through October 6th, a virtual experience

In a 4-week, virtual Innovation Sprint sponsored by Blackstone LaunchPad at the University at Buffalo in partnership with WNY BloodCare and UB’s Office of Interproffesional Education, students will develop innovative solutions to a WNY BloodCare challenge: 

Collaborating in teams, students in a 3-5 member group will develop a proposal to address:

How might WNY BloodCare create a robust “transition to independence” management plan for high school students (Grades 9 – 12) to facilitate these patients’ transition to independent living at college? How might WNY BloodCare assess the effectiveness the transition process?

Students will be asked to specifically consider:

  • Preparing patients and parents for the transition to independent disease management;
  • Introducing patients to working with their healthcare team as an independent adult;
  • Ensuring patients have robust self-management skills;
  • Transition plan must be a short, efficient tool that can be used to prompt discussion with the patient at annual clinic visits;
  • Preparing students for college readiness; and
  • Reporting mechanism for development and implementation of the transition plan.

A virtual Innovation Sprint:

  • Week 1: Thursday, September 8th from 6 – 8:00 p.m. ET – Kick-off
  • Week 2: Thursday, September 15th from 6-7:00 pm ET – Meet with venture coaches & resources.
  • Week 3: Thursday, September 22nd – Teams submit/upload recorded pitch idea.
  • Week 4: Thursday, October 6 – Final Pitch Presentation session from 6-8:00 pm ET.

What is an Innovation Sprint?

You will work collaboratively on a team to solve a challenge statement presented by WNY BloodCare.

Innovation Sprints welcome idea creators and builders! By participating in this Innovation Sprint, you will:

  • Use creative problem solving techniques to help WNY BloodCare find real-world solutions to their challenges;
  • Work collaboratively with other students of all disciplines and pitch your solutions for prizes;

The Cannabis Industry Design Challenge is a virtual 3-week action-learning challenge designed to inspire innovation, exploration, and entrepreneurship in the emerging cannabis industry. Learn how you can be a part of this growing industry.

Our design challenge is an opportunity to learn about the many tracks, legislations, and research during our TED talk style discussions and presentations from industry experts and professionals.

UB Blackstone LaunchPad is hosting a Summer Accelerator Program where you can spend eight weeks ideating, creating and competing for up to $5,000 in prizes!

Become an Honors College Peer Mentor!

We need your help! We have almost 250 incoming Honors Scholars who have requested an Honors College peer mentor.

If you are interested in serving as a Peer Mentor in the Honors Connections Program during the 2022-2023 academic year, please fill out our brief onlineapplication: https://forms.gle/AXGNRPwn9S2kNUudA by Friday, June 10th.

The Honors College Peer Mentor Program is designed to help first-year Honors students adjust to life at UB and to the Honors College experience. Our intent is that through this program, our incoming students feel welcome at UB and excited to be a part of the Honors College community.

As an Honors Connections Program Mentor you will be expected to:

  • Attend a brief virtual mentor orientation this summer (details to follow)
  • Reach out to your mentee(s) prior to the start of the fall semester to welcome them to UB/Honors
  • Meet with your mentee(s) once during the first two weeks of classes via zoom or in-person (each mentor may have 1-3 mentees)
  • Encourage participation in Honors College and campus-wide activities
  • Help answer general questions or concerns your mentee(s) may have

In general, we hope that each mentor will help make the transition to college a little easier for our new Honors College Scholars.

If selected, Honors Peer Mentors will be required to submit a short profile of themselves to be shared with their peer mentee, including a photo.

Position Details    

Department Profile

UB’s division of University Communications (UC) is responsible for university-wide communications and marketing — including branding, media relations, digital (web, social media), editorial/content, and creative design — for the University at Buffalo (UB). The division is highly visible, nationally recognized, and its award-winning communication products represent the public face of the university. As a member of UC’s Digital Communications & Strategy team, you will help us transform the way content is created, distributed and tracked on social media, the web, and other digital communication platforms. You will support the department’s efforts to monitor and shape perceptions, fulfill information needs and provide exceptional service to external and internal audiences of UB.

As our Social Media Multimedia Content and Engagement Assistant you will focus on promoting UB by creating multimedia assets with strong visual acuity to amplify and enhance the research, stories and people of UB.

Additional tasks include:

  • Developing thoughtful and inspiring written and multimedia content for social media
    • Including social videos (such as Instagram stories and TikToks)
  • Monitoring and engaging with online audiences.

You will also learn how to communicate on behalf of the brand and capture UB’s distinct mission and culture.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will:

Hours

  • This PAID student position requires a weekly commitment of 15-20 hours during the academic semester. Hours are available during breaks.
  • Due to current construction on Crofts Hall, this position does NOT require in-person work and can be executed remotely until renovations are completed sometime in the Summer of 2022.

Responsibilities

The Social Media Content/Engagement Assistant will work directly with the Social Media Specialist and collaboratively with other members of the UC team to accomplish the following goals:

  • Plan, write, produce and distribute graphics, copy, video, multimedia and other content on social media
  • Assist in management and administration of UB’s top-level social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn and TikTok)
  • Coordinate cross-unit social media campaigns
  • Continually monitor, identify and engage with our online audiences
  • Support digital analytics activities

Qualifications

  • Required Skills
    • Strong understanding of, and experience using social media (including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and TikTok)
    • Excellent writing (esp. for social)
    • Good handling of visual presentation
      • Knowledge of editing tools including Canva, Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator
  • Additional Skills
    • Video production skills, especially knowledge of video editing tools (proficiency in Adobe Premiere, After Effects or Final Cut Pro is a plus)
    • A strong visual (e.g. photo selection) aesthetic
  • You should:
    • Have a keen sense of individual responsibility and initiative.
    • Enthusiastic team player.
    • Be able to handle multiple and varied assignments. Effective time management and adherence to deadlines.
    • Be a strong verbal communicator.
    • Be comfortable collaborating with others and taking direction; Respect for authority and diverse viewpoints
